Travel Tip of the Week: Oakley’s View

Oakley

Hi.  I’m Oakley.  Yeah, I know.  I’m cute.  Cuddly.  Adorable.  What’s not to love?

The cool thing about being me is Glory takes me with her as she travels around.  I haven’t graduated to airplanes yet, but if we can take the car, I’m in, baby.

Only problem is, a lot of hotels won’t let me stay overnight.  I know, can you believe it?  Rock stars wielding axes can get a hotel room, no prob, but I get the boot.

Well, I’m happy to say a lot of hotels have changed their mind about letting the “Oakster” stay at their digs.

My current favorite is Best Western.  They even have a website for roaming Rovers like myself.  You can find it here:  http://www.bestwestern.com/tripplanner/travelwithpets.asp .

A few weeks ago, Glory took me to the Best Western in Bozeman, Montana. Gorgeous down comforters, flat screen television–it was sweet!  I met this hot pomeranian cruising the halls, but Glory kept me on a short leash.  Better luck next time, Fifi.

Anyway, I’m going to be popping in The Traveling Office from time to time, letting you know where you can take your pooch as you’re traveling around yourself.  I call my column “Oakley’s View.”

So, till next time, stay cool.  And if you see Fifi around, tell her she doesn’t know what she’s missing.

How to Negotiate a Deal in the Arctic: An Interview with Medical Management, Inc.

Molly Ramsay, a recruiter with MedMan, was hiking near Fairbanks, Alaska, when she received word that a top candidate had backed out of a deal.  Not to worry.  MedMan provides Ramsay with the tools and flexibility she needs to get the job done.  She was able to conduct her investigation and negotiate an offer with the next candidate from a trailhead on the Yukon River.

Medical Management, Inc. (MedMan), helps medical groups manage their practices.  It’s a model of how to run a multi-million dollar company virtually.  After going digital 10 years ago, the company has saved thousands of dollars on overhead while allowing employees the flexibility to work while touring France, staying at home with their children and yes, even hiking in Alaska. Travel Tip of the Week

passports

If you’re traveling between countries in North America soon, here’s a little reminder.  The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which became effective June 1, 2009, now requires a passport in most cases to cross borders by land, sea or air.

A few border states and provinces allow certain other approved documents, such as a NEXUS card, but for the most part, expect to show your passport.

Children under 16 can still cross borders with their birth certificates.  Minors over 16 traveling in groups can also use their birth certificates, as long as they’re under adult supervision.

Where’s the Wi-Fi? Featured City: Boise, Idaho

By , June 8, 2009 5:48 am

coffee-and-laptop-photoHas this ever happened to you?

You sit down at a café with your laptop and freshly purchased latte.  You’re preparing to meet with a prospect.  You turn on your browser and up pops the equivalent of a virtual raspberry, asking you for “your credit card, please.”  Or, maybe you discover there are no available wireless networks at all.

Now you’re stuck.  You can’t leave, because your client is expecting you.  You’ve just spent five bucks and will likely have to spend another five bucks after your meeting at another café—one that has Wi-Fi so you can actually get some work done.

Personally, I don’t get it.  It seems to me that charging customers for Wi-Fi is like hosting a successful grand opening and then making your guests pay for cocktail weenies.  To read more of this article, CLICK HERE.

Travel Tip of the Week

Nothing is more annoying than forgetting to bring one of your personal items with you on a trip.  Before you leave for a trip, pack your toiletries bag a day early.

For example, if you leave for your trip on Tuesday morning, pack your toiletries, medicines, styling apparatus, etc. Sunday night and keep the packed bag in your bathroom at home.

Then, if you have forgotten to pack anything, it will become clear to you in the course of your normal routine on Monday–while there’s still time to add it to the suitcase.
